The YKI test explained: levels, parts and how to prepare

Levels, the four parts of the test, what citizenship usually requires, and how to prepare for speaking and writing.

Key takeaways

  • YKI is the Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency, organised by OPH and the University of Jyväskylä.
  • It has three levels (basic, intermediate, advanced) and four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking.
  • Citizenship usually requires the intermediate level, grade 3, in accepted parts; check migri.fi.
  • In writing, cover every point of the task; in speaking, practise filling the time calmly.

What is YKI?

YKI, short for Yleiset kielitutkinnot, is the Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency. It is organised by the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH) together with the University of Jyväskylä. Many people take the Finnish test to show their language skills for Finnish citizenship or for work.

The three levels

LevelGradesRoughly
Perustaso (basic)1–2A1–A2
Keskitaso (intermediate)3–4B1–B2
Ylin taso (advanced)5–6C1–C2

You choose the level when you register. Each part of the test gets its own grade.

The four parts

  • Reading (tekstin ymmärtäminen): notices, messages, articles.
  • Listening (puheen ymmärtäminen): announcements, conversations, interviews.
  • Writing (kirjoittaminen): informal and formal messages and opinion texts.
  • Speaking (puhuminen): recorded answers to narration, situation and opinion tasks.

YKI and Finnish citizenship

For citizenship, the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) requires satisfactory oral and written skills in Finnish or Swedish. With YKI this usually means the intermediate level, grade 3, in a combination of parts that Migri accepts. The exact rules can change, so always check migri.fi before you register.

How to prepare for writing

In writing tasks you must cover every point the task asks for, in the right register.

  • Informal message: start with Hei Anna! and end with Terveisin or Moikka.
  • Formal message: start with Hyvä vastaanottaja and end with Ystävällisin terveisin. Use the conditional: Voisitteko…?
  • Opinion text: use linking phrases: Minun mielestäni…, Toisaalta…, Lisäksi…, Siksi…

Before you write, list the points in the task and tick them off as you go.

How to prepare for speaking

The speaking test is recorded, so there is no one to rescue you. Practise these three types:

  • Kertominen (narration): talk for about a minute about your home, work or a past event.
  • Tilanteet (situations): react to a short situation, for example asking a neighbour to turn the music down.
  • Mielipide (opinion): give your opinion and a reason: Olen sitä mieltä, että… koska…

Record yourself, listen back and practise until you can fill the time calmly.

Practise YKI tasks with SimuCoach

SimuCoach has exam-style writing and speaking tasks at basic and intermediate level. Each task comes with the Finnish instruction, a translation on request, guiding questions, useful phrases and a model answer. After you answer you get feedback on the points you covered and an estimated grade. The estimate guides your practice; only the official test gives a certificate.

Questions and answers

What is a good YKI score?

Each part is graded separately. At the intermediate level, grade 3 corresponds roughly to B1 and grade 4 to B2. Grade 3 is the most commonly required result.

How should I practise for the YKI speaking test?

Record yourself answering narration, situation and opinion tasks within the time limit, listen back and improve. Learn linking phrases such as Minun mielestäni and Toisaalta.
