Finnish pronunciation guide: vowels, long sounds and stress
The eight vowels, short and long sounds, double consonants and where the stress goes.
Key takeaways
- Every Finnish letter is pronounced, and spelling matches sound.
- Finnish has eight vowels, including ä, ö and y.
- Vowel and consonant length changes meaning: tuli vs tuuli.
- Stress is always on the first syllable.
Finnish is spoken as it is written
Finnish pronunciation is very regular: each letter stands for one sound, and every letter is pronounced. Once you know the sounds, you can read any Finnish word aloud correctly, even if you don’t know what it means.
The eight vowels
Finnish has eight vowels: a, e, i, o, u, y, ä, ö. Three of them are new for many learners:
- ä is like the a in English “cat”: äiti (mother).
- ö is like the vowel in German “schön”: yö (night).
- y is like German ü or French u: kylä (village).
a and ä are different sounds and change the meaning: sade (rain) vs säde (ray).
Short and long sounds
Length changes meaning. A doubled letter is pronounced about twice as long:
- tuli (fire) – tuuli (wind)
- kuka (who) – kukka (flower)
- tapan (I kill) – tapaan (I meet)
Practise saying pairs like these slowly, then at normal speed.
Stress and rhythm
The main stress is always on the first syllable: KAU-pun-ki, RAU-ta-tie-a-se-ma. Other syllables are not reduced, so Finnish sounds even and clear.
Consonants to watch
- r is rolled with the tip of the tongue.
- h is always pronounced, also in the middle of a word: vihko.
- ng is a long nasal sound, as in English “singer”: kengät.
- k, p, t are not aspirated: say them softer than in English.

Questions and answers
How do you pronounce ä in Finnish?
Ä is an open front vowel, close to the a in English “cat”. It is a separate letter from a, and swapping them can change the meaning of a word.
Is Finnish pronunciation hard?
Finnish pronunciation is one of the easier parts of the language because it is regular. The main challenges are the vowels ä, ö and y and keeping long and short sounds apart.
